- Golden Designs recommends a concrete slab, concrete pavers, gravel, cinder blocks or a solid wood deck
- Rest the support cradles on blocks or another solid structure so the barrel can't settle into the ground
- Apply an exterior wood water-repellent treatment within a month of assembly, then 2–3 times a year. Untreated cedar starts to turn grey after 1–2 years without a UV protectant.
- Some water seepage at the top and sides is normal in the rain and dries when the sauna runs. A waterproof cover is recommended when it's not in use.
Installation
How assembly works
The barrel is built from interlocking wood staves on support cradles, then fastened with stainless steel bands. Golden Designs lists a Phillips screwdriver (battery-operated recommended), a claw hammer, a 17 mm wrench and a ladder, and calls for three adults. A certified electrician must install the stove. The owner's manual walks through every step with diagrams.
Before delivery
- Prepare a level, solid base: a slab, pavers, gravel, cinder blocks or a deck
- Book a certified electrician for the 240 V, 30 A stove circuit
- Plan a 120 V, 15 A outdoor-rated outlet for the lights
Build the barrel
- Set the 3 support cradles in place
- Lay the staves around the cradles, checking each one with a level
- Fit the front wall with the glass door and the rear wall
Finish & power on
- Tighten the stainless steel bands with a 17 mm wrench
- Install the benches, backrest and stove guard
- Your electrician installs the stove, then run a first heat cycle

Using & care
Simple to use, easy to keep
Your session
- Most people enjoy it at 170–185°F
- Ladle a little water onto the stones for a burst of steam
- For every 4 hours of use, let the sauna rest for 1 hour
Stay comfortable
- Drink water before, during and after
- Sit on a folded towel, with another on the floor
- Wait 30 minutes after hard exercise, and cool down slowly before you shower
Care
- Inside, vacuum the floor and wipe the wood with water and a non-toxic cleaner
- Treat the exterior with a water repellent 2–3 times a year
- Let the stove cool for at least 20 minutes before touching it
Leave the sauna right away if you feel dizzy, sleepy or uncomfortable. If you're pregnant, have a heart or blood pressure condition, take medication or have any medical condition, check with your clinician before use. Avoid alcohol before or during sessions, and supervise children closely. Cedar can cause eye, skin or breathing irritation in some people. Stop using the sauna if you notice symptoms.
